Ancient Egypt- Analysis
Now that you know a little something about Ancient Egypt, you're going to take that knowledge and apply it to what you know about modern day American culture. Using your journal entries, think about the following cultural aspects. Use the questions below to write at least one paragraph in your journal for each cultural characteristic comparing Ancient Egypt to modern America.
COMMUNICATION-- Think about the symbolic nature of the Ancient Egyptian writing system. In what ways do modern Americans use symbols to communicate?
HISTORY-- Can you think about any similarities between the Ancient Egyptian civilization unification and a time in American history when unification was an issue? Who were the leaders in both scenarios and what were their goals?
BELIEFS-- There are great contrasts between the Ancient Egyptian religion and the popular religions practiced in America today, however, using what you discovered about the Ancient Egyptian beliefs, discuss what the deities of Ancient Egypt represented and how those ideas play out in our modern society.
GEOGRAPHY-- Is there a corresponding physical feature in both Ancient Egypt and America? How is the biome of Ancient Egypt represented in the United States? Think about how the Ancient Egyptians used their land and discuss the similarities to America.
ARTS & SCIENCE-- What contributions in these fields did the Ancient Egyptians give to our modern society? Is there something today that is similar to a pyramid (for its purpose/use)? Are there any modern pyramids?
FOOD-- If there was an Ancient Egyptian show on the Cooking channel, what recipes and foods would be on TV that someone might eat today?
LABOR-- What jobs in Ancient Egypt are still jobs someone might have today? Do they have the same importance today as they did for the Ancient Egyptians?
Lastly, write one paragraph as a conclusion discussing what was the most surprising and/or interesting thing you learned. Were there things you wished you knew more about-- like what? Do you think the Ancient Egyptians were more or less like us and why? Do you think there are other cultures that share similarities with our modern civilization? Which ones?
To think about: are there things all people from all times have in common? Why do you think so?
